Simon Gillmore - 2007 Overall Champion

STUART MALONEY
2008 CARIBBEAN CIRCUIT RACING CHAMPION

Stuart Maloney continued his dominance of the 2008 Caribbean Championship Series with a clinical performance at the final Round of the Series held at the South Dakota Circuit in Guyana which left spectators in awe and his fellow competitors scrambling to find a way to deal with the 'little master' as he skillfully piloted his Automotive Art, Crane & Equipment and Simpson Motors sponsored Mitsubishi Evolution to two wins and a fourth position from his three races en route to amassing 55 Points and being crowned the 2008 Caribbean Champion Driver.
Entering the last meet of the Series second in points behind his father Doug, Stuart had a scare as the Evo's engine developed a misfire on Qualifying Day which was not sorted before his Session ran and resulted in him posting the third fastest time of 35.832, with David Summerbell Jr. of Jamaica (35.453) and Andrew King of Guyana (35.644) occupying positions 1 & 2 respectively on the Grid for Race 1 the following day.
Later that evening the ace mechanics combination of Tommy Fields and Brett Judd found the problem which had plagued the Evo earlier in the day, miraculously a rocker which had fallen off, lodged itself in a position where no damage was done to the engine. The problem was rectified and Stuart was once again optimistic about his chances on race day.
As the first race for the Championship was approaching the weather took a turn for the worse and the heavens opened up with rain. As the showers abated and racing resumed Team Barbados made the switch to rain tyres in preparation for a race on a wet track. One notable exception from the starting lineup was the Red Bull, DaCosta Manning, Spancrete Machinery & Ratec sponsored Mazda RX 3 of Mark Maloney. The sweet sounding 20B had already become a crowd favourite from its practice sessions but was found to have a broken selector pin in the gearbox when Mark took it on an early morning warm up run. Members of his team had left the track bound for a nearby machine shop to get the part welded.

As the pace car left the track and the lights went green, the 'little master' had his Evo literally pasted to the tail pipe of Summerbell's TA1, with Guyana's Andrew King in a similar position behind him as they negotiated turn 1.Start of Race 1 By turn 2 he had already effected an effortless pass to take the lead, opening a 4 secs. gap by the end of lap 1. This gap was to be doubled by the time the Clerk of Course amazingly made a belated decision to red flag the race at the end of lap 6. This action was taken due to an accident involving Guyana's Kevin Jeffrey, Canada's Paul Vieira and Barbados' Stuart Williams on the inside of turn 1 at the start of lap 4. The yellow caution came out in the turn immediately and all drivers had negotiated their way safely past the danger on two occasions before the race was stopped. This saw all the cars return to the pit in preparation for the restart which was sometime in coming as there was another downpour causing a halt to any further racing action for more than an hour.
Having watched Stuart disappear in the distance over those six laps would have been enough cause for concern among his fellow CC competitors. While they pondered their faith, the betting spectators assembled at every vantage point around South Dakota, scrambled to see if they were any takers on who would occupy second position for the remaining races, the winner seemingly a forgone conclusion.
The race was restarted after another rain delay which lasted for just over an hour. It was more of the same as Stuart once again dominated the field, five of the sixteen starters on a track that was quickly drying under the blazing heat that had returned. Mark Maloney whose car had now been repaired was also a starter but immediately found the going tough as he had to contend with a serious misfire. He finished in seventh position behind his father Doug in sixth. Andrew King continued to be plagued by the problems he had at Round 2 and was one of the lapped competitors. Barbados registered their first two causalities when Stuart Williams in the outclassed Williams Equipment Ltd., KDJ Auto Parts & Mix 96.9FM Toyota Starlet retired on lap 1 with a blown engine. Steve King in the Percy King Auto Parts & Castrol Nissan Skyline competing in the merged Group 4 Class completed a dismal event after he broke the spare gearbox that he changed to after breaking the original one during a practice session. It was a very disappointing outcome for Steve whose practice times suggested that he would have dominated his Group on Race Day.
