Driver Development Advice

I get asked regularly about condensing advice for parents. Here it is- Concentrate on the process and NOT the result. Have your driver do three things - in other words, stick to these basics-

* Pick your reference points (on the race track)

* Let the car do the work

* Read the car (the set up)

    -----------------

Skip Barber Seminars

Derek recently conducted a seminar for the drivers of the Skip Barber National Championship at the Virginia International Raceway. Titled "What is your model for success", Derek asked them to create a model for their success as race car drivers from existing models.

By having them create the model, it is an easier sell to ask them to consider building the model they created. Only the truly dedicated will do it.

Derek Indy 500 History

Derek raced in the Indy 500 six times between 1983-1989. He finished one time in 1985. His best qualifying position was in 1989 when he started on the third row of the grid. Unfortunately he went out early with a gearbox failure.

Paul Newman

Derek and Paul Newman share a laugh on the set of the Tonight Show

I got  a call on Friday evening October 26th, before it was officially announced, that Paul had died. I have known Paul for more than 25 years. I gave him a signed a copy of my new book- Race to Win, in May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I always sign the Gaelic word "Slainte" when autographing anything. The literal translation of "Slainte" means - Good Health. When I explained to him what the word meant, he leaned over and whispered.....I need a lot of that right now.

I went with him twice to the Tonight Show when he challenged Jay Leno to a go kart race around the NBC studios. I was the announcer and of course he won each time.

Paul was  a great race car driver, a great philanthropist, a great team owner and partner and a great man.

Race to Win by Derek Daly

Reviews

England……there is just so much useful information there, blended together with anecdotes from Daly’s career to back up the key points, that anybody looking to give themselves a leg-up in racing would be well advised to give this a read……..

……he has produced a highly engaging product that will, if used correctly, bring the reader up a level in racing. Isn’t that the point after all?
