King joined the IMS Radio Network in 1995 as a pit reporter for the Indianapolis 500. He was named chief announcer of the Indianapolis 500 and all IndyCar Series events in 1999. A native of Winston-Salem , N.C. , King began his career in sports communications by serving as play-by-play announcer for Campbell University , his alma mater, from 1977-80. He was a sports writer and editor for several daily newspapers in North Carolina and returned to Campbell University as sports information director in 1981-82. He embarked on a career in television in 1982, first working for the CBS affiliate in Greenville , N.C.
